There’s something special about a home that feels collected rather than cataloged. The pieces that tell a story—the ones with a little wear, a little history—are often the ones that make a space feel truly lived in. That’s why Facebook Marketplace has become one of my favorite places to source furniture and decor for my own home and for clients.

Shopping secondhand isn’t just about saving money (though that’s a lovely bonus). It’s about finding quality, character, and charm you simply can’t replicate with something brand new.

What Makes Facebook Marketplace So Good for Home Finds

Facebook Marketplace is essentially a constantly rotating estate sale happening right in your neighborhood. Unlike traditional vintage shops, the inventory changes daily and its literally at your fingertips—and often includes solid wood furniture, vintage accents, and well-made pieces at a fraction of their original cost.

Some of my best finds have come from quick scrolls during quiet moments: a classic dresser that just needed fresh hardware, a vintage mirror with the perfect patina, or a dining table built to last another generation.

What to Look For (and What to Skip)

When shopping secondhand, I always focus on bones over beauty.

Look for:

  • Solid wood furniture
  • Timeless silhouettes (simple lines age better than trends)
  • Clean, upscale upholstery
  • Classic pieces that can be reupholstered
  • Pieces that feel sturdy, even if the finish isn’t perfect
  • Sets of vintage china, real silverware or drinkware
  • Interesting art

Be cautious with:

  • Particle board or veneer that’s peeling
  • Heavily damaged structural pieces
  • Anything that shows visible signs of bugs or mold

A scratched surface or outdated finish is usually an easy fix. Poor construction is not.

How to Search Like a Pro

Facebook Marketplace search results for wooden dresser listings.

A few small tricks make Marketplace shopping far less overwhelming:

  • Search broad terms like “wood dresser” or “vintage table” rather than specific styles
  • Check listings often—good pieces go fast
  • Save searches so Marketplace learns what you like, even if the price or piece isn’t exactly right
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for measurements or additional photos

And yes—negotiating is part of the process. A kind, respectful message goes a long way.

The Search Terms I Always Use on Facebook Marketplace

Knowing what to search is half the battle when it comes to secondhand shopping. I rarely search trendy or overly specific terms—instead, I focus on broad, timeless keywords that surface better-quality pieces (and often from sellers who aren’t pricing for “vintage market” value).

Some of my go-to search terms include:

  • Wood dresser / vintage dresser
  • Wash stand
  • Solid wood table
  • Antique cabinet
  • Pine cabinet
  • Pine hutch
  • Wooden bookshelf / bookcase
  • China cabinet
  • Vintage vanity
  • Antique secretary
  • Oil painting
  • Blue and white dishes
  • Cottage floral (curtains, table cloths, upholstered pieces, fabric remnants)
  • Designer fabric

Why Broad Terms Work Better Than Trendy Ones

Sellers don’t always know design terminology—and that’s actually to your advantage. A beautifully made mid-century dresser might be listed simply as “wood dresser,” meaning less competition and better pricing.

Searching with simpler terms also uncovers pieces with timeless shapes that can be styled in a way that feels fresh and personal, rather than locked into a specific trend. However, if you have something very specific on your want list (i.e. Wedgewood, an Eastlake dresser, etc), feel free to mix those specific search terms in.

A Quick Tip for Saving Searches

Once you find terms that consistently bring up good results, save them! Facebook Marketplace will start showing you similar listings, making it easier to spot great pieces before they’re gone.

A little strategy goes a long way—and the more you search, the better your eye becomes.

Why I Love Using Secondhand Pieces for Clients

Beyond sustainability and budget benefits, secondhand finds help create homes that don’t feel cookie-cutter. These pieces add depth, warmth, and individuality—things that can’t be rushed or mass-produced.

A home with history always feels more personal.

If you’ve been hesitant to shop secondhand, consider this your sign to start small. One well-chosen piece can completely change the feel of a room—and you just might fall in love with the hunt.
